The Importance of Language Practice and Assessment in Canada's Workforce
 
There are many barriers newcomers face when moving to a new country and the anxiety surrounding knowing and understanding the country’s primary and or secondary language is quite prevalent as a requirement to obtaining most employment in Canada. The difference of having met the language requirements needed to immigrate into Canada varies slightly than skills needed to work in your profession. The main concern for employers is Health and Safety in the workplace in most cases and ensuring you have the adequate level of the 4 skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing lowers the risk of dangerous situations. However, do not let that anxiety deter you away from achieving your goals. There are many ways to improve your skills. Before arriving, begin your language learning journey by downloading apps such as Mauril, YouTube, Duolingo, HelloTalk and Tandem* and accessing online content such as the Language Portal of Canada which is a Government resource aiding with grammar, spelling, translation and more.
 
Once you arrive, consider visiting a Language Assessment organization. Certified Language Assessors can assess your language proficiency to determine your Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level. If need be, and language classes are something you may need, Language Assessment organizations are able to place you in classes around your city. Please keep in mind, if you are an Ontario Resident, over the age of 18, with one of the eligible Immigration statuses, you qualify for free government funded language training!

LARC: Language Assessment and Referral Centre  
 
Just arrived in Canada and curious about where your language level fits in? Thinking about getting your language level assessed? Are you curious to know about language classes around the city and other government funded programs and support services? The Y’s Language Assessment and Referral Centre (LARC) is open at both locations, Central and South/West and available to serve clients virtually and in person. LARC provides newcomers with English or French language assessments for government funded programs and their services range from nationally recognized language assessments based on Canadian Language Benchmarks, providing information on local language classes and support services, to referrals to government-funded language programs and other services and programs in the community! This service is beneficial on many levels and may help you to feel more confident in determining and achieving your goals.
